Many of the publically traded companies in the US are headquartered in Dallas. There are nine of the Fortune 500 companies there alone, with Dallas-Fort Worth containing 22. These companies include Southwest Airlines, Energy Transfer Equity, Jacobs Engineering, and Dean Foods. This makes Dallas-Forth Worth the largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies in the entire state.

Although Dallas used to rely mostly on farming, it’s grown in various industries. One large industry is telecommunications. Starting with companies like the Collins Radio Corporation, Dallas is considered the heart of Silicon Prairie because of the high concentration of telecommunications companies in the region. In the suburb of Richardson, you can find Texas Instruments, Nortel Networks, AT&T, Verizon Communications, Rockwell Collins, and many more. Texas Instruments is a large employer in the area as well, with around 10,400 employees at its Dallas headquarters and chip plants.

Another large industry in Dallas is real estate. There’s been a significant growth continuing from the 2000s from repurposing of older commercial buildings in downtown Dallas for residential purposes. The addition of Klyde Warren Park has also helped in a smoother connection between central Dallas and Uptown as well as creating significant new development for the area. The Dallas metro leads the nation in home price appreciation and single-family home sales, along with apartment construction.

The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) is one of the largest and busiest airports in the world. It’s the 2nd largest in the U.S. and 9th in the world. It’s the headquarters for American Airlines and located within the Fort Worth city limits. The other airport serving the area is Dallas Love Field. It’s headquarters for Southwest Airlines and is six miles northwest of downtown Dallas.

Also within the city limits is Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth. It is a training facility for aircrews and ground support personnel as well as equipping of aircrews.  

In the Dallas metro, there are 38 different higher education facilities including universities, colleges, trade schools, and other educational institutions. The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School is part of University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas and makes for the biggest grouping of medical facilities in the world. Getting into this university is very selective – only 200 students are admitted a year. The University of Texas at Dallas is part of the University of Texas System and well-known for how it merges technology and the arts as well as other programs including engineering, computer science, economics.

Dallas-Fort Worth is home to six major league sports teams. The Dallas Cowboys with the NFL play at the AT&T Stadium and are the most valuable sports franchise in the world. The Texas Rangers Play at Global Life Park in Arlington as part of the MLB. The NBA team is the Dallas Mavericks, who play at the American Airline Center and the WNBA team, Dallas Wings, play at College Park Center. At the Toyota Stadium, you can watch the MLS team FC Dallas. The Dallas Stars are the local NHL team, also playing at the American Airlines Center when the Mavericks aren’t.
