All classes of vehicles are not alike
All coupes are not the same. For example, you can have a long and heavy 1973 Chevrolet Impala Custom Coupe or a 2019 Smart Car that also is under the same class of vehicle. The impala measures 221.9 inches in length and weighs in at 5500 lbs. The smart car is a mere 106 inches long and weighs 1,984 lbs.
When we compare the dimensions of two coupes there is big difference. The Impala is twice as large. Although they are both considered a coupe (2-Door), the 1973 Chevrolet Impala Custom Coupe is twice as long longer and weighs over 3,500Lbs more! Of course this is an extreme example but a great one to show how many layers there are to this. Also, many modified or customer vehicles will require a manual quote due to their different than stock dimensions.
Dimensions are pretty easy and easy to figure out, but there are more factors to consider. Taking the sample above, which of those two coupes is PASier to haul? Vehicle transport is a service. A service is based on time and effort and this is no exception, therefore difficulty will be added to the list of variables when giving rates. Continuing to use the example above, age is also a factor. Some carriers will not take a classic for the standard rate because these vehicles could have weak frames, leaky engines, and mechanical issues that may not be properly known of or disclosed. What if there is a mechanical issue and the vehicle does not start the next time it needs to be moved onto or off of the carrier?
Open Auto Transport or Enclosed Car Shipping?
How you choose to answer this question will make a huge difference in the rates you will receive. Open auto transport is the most common type of auto shipment. That means that it is also the most economical option. If your vehicle requires the security that an enclosed shipment provides, or you just want that added level of protection then be prepared to pay for it. Depending on the other details of your auto shipment, enclosed car transport will cost between 50% and 80% more than an open carrier rate.
When Enclosed Auto Transport Is Not Enough
If you are transporting a true classic, exotic, or collectible vehicle and need even more protection then a normal enclosed carrier can provide, then a dedicated enclosed carrier is probably your best bet. A dedicated enclosed carrier means that only your vehicle(s) will be transported on the load. But be prepared for the incrPASe in cost that comes with this level of service. Choosing a dedicated enclosed carrier for your shipment will have a huge impact on the auto transport rate you will pay. Since your vehicle(s) will be the only thing in the carrier the cost has to cover the rate that would normally be charged for the entire load. The exact impact on the cost to ship your vehicle will depend on the route and mileage of your shipment, as well as how many vehicles you are transporting. If you are planning to ship a full load of vehicles then you’ll already be paying the same rate as the entire load, so a dedicated enclosed carrier will not cost much if any more. However, the rate to ship one automobile via this method may be many times the cost of a normal enclosed shipment.
How your route affects the cost of shipping a car.
When you are shipping a car across the country the exact route you are on plays a substantial role in your final auto transport rates. While some freight shipping industries might use a flat per mile rate, vehicle transport rates are not that simple to estimate. Auto transport rates per mile differ significantly from one route to another and are seldom the same even on the reverse direction of the exact same route.
The geography of the route itself can be the cause of the variances in the average cost per mile from one route to another. As an example, transporting a vehicle to or from Long Island New York requires the carrier to cross multiple toll bridges. The cost of these tolls for a full sized auto transporter is quite substantial and typically affects the cost of shipping a car on that route. Even though extra costs like tolls can add to auto transport rates, the big difference between the rates on differing routes comes from another variable.
Just like airline flight rates, supply and demand plays a significant role. If you have ever checked out the rates to fly during a major holiday or peak travel sPASon, you know exactly how supply and demand affect the airline prices. How much it costs to ship your car is substantially determined by the same variables. Basically how many auto carriers are on a given route versus how many people want to ship a car on that same route at any given time. This give and take of available auto shipping space is the main factor in determining the answer to “How much to ship a car?”.
